JONATHAN lazcano dijo... medicine. provision of service Provision of medical care is classified into primary, secondary and tertiary care categories. Primary care medical services are provided by physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or other health professionals who have first contact with a patient seeking medical treatment or care. These occur in physician offices, clinics, nursing homes, schools, home visits and other places close to patients. About 90% of medical visits can be treated by the primary care provider. They examine people, listen to them describe their health problems, and do tests to see what is wrong. They give people medicine and other kinds of treatment. They also give advice about diet, exercise, and sleep. There are many kinds of doctors. Family and general practitioners are often the first doctors that people go to when they get sick. These doctors treat common problems. They also send patients to other doctors, called specialists. Specialists are experts in specific types of health problems. For example, internists focus on problems with internal organs. Pediatricians care for children and babies. Surgeons perform operations, like fixing broken bones or transplanting organs. Most doctors are doctors of medicine (M.D.). They treat all kinds of diseases and injuries. Some doctors are doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). They focus on muscles and bones. Many doctors work long hours, at all times of day and night. About 3 out of 10 physicians worked more than 60 hours a week in 2008. But doctors who work in small offices often have more time off. Doctors sometimes have to rush to the hospital to deal with emergencies. 1 de mayo de 2011 14:45

Passive Voice: Intermediate & Advanced Exercises (and Explanation)
English Level : Intermediate, Advanced
Language Focus : A review of the passive voice in contrast to the active voice
Grammar Worksheet : active-passive-voice-worksheet.docx (scroll down to study the exercises online)
Jump to : Intermediate Exercises , Advanced Exercises
Note : For a detailed explanation of why we use the passive voice, please read this lesson .
Review of the Passive Voice
Only sentences that have the object of a verb can be changed to the passive voice.
Active voice : I invited John .
[subject] + [verb] + [ object ]
Passive voice : John was invited by me.
In a passive sentence, the object of the verb (in the active sentence) becomes the subject. This is the structure for the passive voice:
John was invited (by me).
[subject] + [ BE + Past Participle] (by actor)
The (by actor) part of the sentence is optional.
Reminder #1
An active sentence that does not have an object cannot be made into the passive voice.
Active voice : She cried . (The verb has no object, so you cannot make a passive sentence)
Active voice : An accident happened . (Again, no object, so you cannot form a passive sentence)
Intransitive verbs , verbs that never have an object, like be, die, happen, exist, appear can never be made into the passive voice. Only transitive verbs ( enjoy, kill, catch, show ) can be used in the passive voice. (Hint: They are called trans itive because you can trans fer an object to them.)

A ghost appeared . (The intransitive verb 'appear' has no object.)
Distinguishing between Passive and Active Voice
Guideline 1 : If the sentence does not contain BE + Past Participle, then it cannot be a passive sentence.
John was eating a snack. (Not passive — no BE + Past Participle)
Guideline 2 : Look at the subject of the sentence and then the verb . Then ask yourself if the subject is the actor of the verb (did John eat?) or was the subject the object of the verb (Did someone eat John?). If the subject is the actor, then it's an active sentence. If the subject is the object of the verb, then it's a passive sentence.
Let's try some exercises.
Intermediate Exercise #1 — Distinguishing between Active or Passive Voice

I did not like that the answers were given all at once and could not go back to see my own and they were right just slightly different.
I would add more guiding and explanations as to why you might be incorrect.
Hi, this is Hiya Bhattacharya, a standard 7 student of ICSE board. I just clicked on the website and found such AMAZING exercises which are really helpful for my tests. It would be more effective if it had Quasi-Passive sentences so that we could have a clear idea of Active and Passive.
Overall, the wide range of exercises is surely going to be helpful for all the students.
I feel that this exercise was helpful in advancing my knowledge about passive and active voice. This is because I was able to complete different examples of the voices and develop a better understanding of when they are used.

Why this sentence is in this way? My very thanks.
Hello. The verb ‘ordered’ is a verb that can be used in the subjunctive mood. This mood is formal. For example, the verb ‘suggest’ can be used in the subjunctive, e.g. ‘I suggest he be fired’. See here for more details: https://www.englishclub.com/grammar/subjunctive.htm
I also had some confusion but now everything is right thanks to you
i agree with you but don”t you think there are more wrong sentences?I think this is a little wired . ;)
the tests was a bit confusing but somehow noticed my mistakes.
Yes it was very helpful, thank you.
It was very helpful, thank you have a nice day;)
Why is it ‘The judge ordered that smoking be prohibited’ and not The judge ordered that smoking will be prohibited’ ?
Hello. ‘Melina’ asked the same question in March. Look up about 5 comments and you’ll see my answer.
hello, I have 2 questions, I didn’t understand what tense to use in the senteneces 4. The judge ordered that smoking … (prohibit) in restaurants. 6. The airplane, which … (operate) by Singapore Airlines, … (fly) by an experienced pilot. Could you help me?
4. be prohibited. For help with this, see the comment from Melina above. 6. was operated, was flown. I can see that for this question, it’s not clear why the past tense should be used instead of the present or future. I will make the question clearer.
Very nice and very easy for me ;)

Chemicals can be toxic.. Please change it into active
This is not a passive sentence, so it cannot be transformed into active ♀️
It cannot be made into the passive voice because the verb “BE” does not have an object (the verb BE uses a complement, not an object).
Great set of exercises for practice. Thank you.
To determine the passive voice you will have to focus on this words :- Be,been, being, let,,have, has, had, and passive voice always consists of verb in 3rd form which means past participle. The format is. : OBJECT + AUXILIARY VERBS + V³ (VERB IN 3rd FORM) + … by S² ( he changes to him,she to her, they to them, we by us , etc )
Teacher it’s pretty hard for me because now I am in level 5 I am not qualified
You should include, Advanced & Intermediate, Active & Passive Voice Paragraph Exercises/Activities. ***They are highly important.***.
Transitive verbs are used in regular sentences when a verb has an object, e.g. “I hired a worker.” < This is 'transitive' because the verb, hired, is transferred an object (a worker).

Exercise (Self-assessment)
Passive voice (discoveries and inventions), presentation / objective.
How much do you know about inventions?

Experimenter Publishing. (2008). Science and Invention Nov 1928 Cover 2. Retrieved 16/02/17 from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Science_and_Invention_Nov_1928_Cover_2.jpg
We will travel around the world and time to learn more about the most important and the newest discoveries and inventions and their authors. On the linguistic aspect, we will learn about passive voice, what it is, how we form it, when we use it, and its difference to active voice.
At the end of this topic you will: Apply the concept of passive voice in sentences in the context of discoveries and inventions around the globe.
So, let’s talk about discoveries and inventions.

Read the following short texts about the inventions.

Alles. (2016). Teléfono de la vendimia. Retrieved 16/02/17 from https://pixabay.com/es/tel%C3%A9fono-de-la-vendimia-tel%C3%A9fono-1750817/
The invention of the telephone was done by a group of individuals, many different companies. However, it is believed that the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1875 with the help of his friend Thomas A. Watson.
Mobile phones

Anders. (2006). Mobile pone evolution. Retrieved 16/02/17 from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mobile_phone_evolution.jpg
A mobile phone is a portable telephone that can make and receive calls over a radio frequency while the user is moving around a telephoned serviced area. The first mobile phone was created by Martin Cooper a researcher from Motorola in 1973. And the first phonecall was made to John F Mitchel. It was until 1980’s when the first commercial mobile phones were sold. And, do you have a mobile phone?
Smart phones

Dambrāns, K. (2014). iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus vs iPhone 5S. Retreived 16/02/17 from https://www.flickr.com/photos/janitors/15707819731
The first mobile phone with smart devices incorporated was developed by IBM in 1992, but it was not very popular in the world. It was until 1994 that the first commercially produced Smartphone was introduced by the company Simon Personal Communicator. Emails and faxes were received by the SImon, the name of the first Smartphone.
As you can see, we’re talking about one of the most incredible inventions of our time, the phone.
Now look at the following sentences taken from the texts:

This sentence is written in passive voice, we recognize the passive voice by looking at different elements, for example the subject is at the end of the sentence.
Another important element of a passive voice sentence is that we use the verb to be and the participle of another verb.
Communicator
One of the key features of the passive voice is that the first element in the sentence is the OBJECT or the element that is being affected by the verb.
Unscrambled sentences
Read the following scrambled sentences and put them in the correct order.
Look at the following explanation that will give you more detailed information.
What is there to know about passive voice?
When do we use a passive voice sentence?
The main idea behind a passive voice sentence is the emphasis we give to the object or action that we do. For example: a. The light bulb was invented by Thomas A. Edison. We emphasize the object/action by putting them in first place in a sentence. In (a) we say that the light bulb and not the telephone is what Thomas A. Edison invented. b. Light bulbs are made of glass Sometimes the subject of an action is not important or relevant for the sentence like in (b). In those cases where the subject is not relevant we can use passive voice.
Verb to be in passive voice?
As we previously said, the key factor of passive voice is that we emphasize the object/action of a sentence and NOT the subject. For this reason is that we make changes to the verbs. One important characteristic about passive voice sentences is the use of the verb to be and the use of another verb in the participle form. The verb to be indicates the tense. Look at the examples: c. Penicillin was invented by the Scottish scientist Ian Fleming d. Penicillin is used today to cure diseases like pneumonia. In both sentences (c) and (d) the verb to be is used to form passive voice. In (c) we can see the verb to be is in past form, so we have a past passive voice. In (d) the verb to be is the present tense, so we have a present passive voice.
Main verbs in passive voice.
When we say main verbs, we refer to the action verbs. In concept 2 we mentioned that the verb to be indicates the tense: past, present, etc. The action verb expresses the activity performed. Look at the sentences: c. Penicillin was invented by the Scottish scientist Ian Fleming d. Penicillin is used today to cure diseases like pneumonia. In (c) and (d) the main verbs invent and use are used in their participle form.
A simple rule to identify sentences in passive voice?
Match the verbs.
To make appropriate passive voice sentences it is really important to know verbs.
Did you make the appropriate matching of the verbs? Excellent! In the passive voice it is really important to identify the appropriate form of the verbs.

Sometimes it is difficult to mention the name of the “inventor”, because there are many people involved. In other ocassions, the person that takes credit for an invention just added a crucial changed to the object to make it more popular. In any case, inventions make sometimes revolutions in our daily lives. Which invention do you find most important?
Active or passive voice?
The Following sentences were taken from the previous text about the most important inventions.
What is the tense?
The basic tenses in English are simple past, simple present, simple future. Passive voice is not precisely a new tense, passive voice is simply another way to express things where we put special emphasis on the object/action of the sentence. To appropiately form a passive voice we need verb to be & participle of an action verb.
indicate tense
Participle of verb
indicate action performed
What about the negative and interrogative?
As with other tenses, it is important to identify how to use the negative and the interrogative form, here you will find a brief explanation:
The negative in passive voice

Regularly negative forms are expressed through the use of NOT. Look at the example: a. Fire was NOT discovered by the modern man b. Regular books are NOT read by new generations who prefer e-boks The first example is a past passive sentence, and we know it because the verb to be is in past. On the contrary the second sentence is in present passive, the verb to be is in the present tense. As you can see the particle NOT is placed right before the auxiliary (to be) and before the main action verb in participle. It is possible to find them in contractions such as: Is not→ isn’t Are not → aren’t Was not → wasn’t Were not → weren’t
The interrogative form in passive voice

As in any other interrogative form, the auxiliary plays an important role in questions. It MUST BE placed in first position: c. Was penicillyn discovered in 2001? d. Is Facebook used by millions of people? In the examples in (c) and (d) you can see that the auxiliary in first position makes possible to have an interrogative form of a sentence.

Grammar explanation
We use the passive voice to change the focus of the sentence.
My bike was stolen. (passive – focus on my bike ) Someone stole my bike. (active – focus on someone )
We often use the passive:
- when we prefer not to mention who or what does the action (for example, it's not known, it's obvious or we don't want to say)
- so that we can start a sentence with the most important or most logical information
- in more formal or scientific writing.
How we make the passive
We make the passive using the verb be + past participle. We start the sentence with the object.
It is not always necessary to add who or what did the action.
Only the form of be changes to make the tense. The past participle stays the same. Here are examples of the passive in its most common tenses.

How do you say: "I love big cake" in the passive?
- Log in or register to post comments
Hello EnglishZabjaa,
The object of the active sentence 'big cake' becomes the subject of the passive sentence. Then you use the verb 'be' plus the past participle of the verb 'love'. Following that, you can say 'by' plus the subject of the active sentence.
The result ('Big cake is loved by me') sounds a bit ridiculous, which goes to show that we don't use the passive in all situations!

Hello Team,
I'm struggling with the word "target". Which of these sentences is the correct passive form?
The programme targets junior students 1. The programme is targeted at junior students 2. Junior students are targeted by the programme.
Sentence 1 does not change the subject, but also seems to be correct. Am I missing something here?
Hello Bryan______,
All of these sentences are correct. Target (like similar verbs such as aim and focus (on) , and also verbs such as comprise, form and make up ) can be used with the same meaning in both active and passive voice with essentially the same meaning.
The LearnEnglish Team
Junior students are being targeted by the program. I think is the passive of the sentence as passive requires a "be" form..
Hi, I think there is a mistake in the first exercise in the following sentence;
The fire service still ___ the fire. The options given are: wasn't put out. is put out. haven't put out.
The third answer is supposed to be the correct one! But it should be "has not put out" since the agent is an "it."
Hi bkbilal97,
Actually, in British English it is common to use a third person plural verb form even for singular nouns, if the noun represents a group of people. Such nouns include government , team , band , company , gang and many more. For example, it's common to say The band are really good (as well as The band is really good ), or The government have made an announcement (as well as The government has made ... ).
Hello team Kindly help me change this sentence to passive. People thought that the cover was made of iron. I am confused when the first and second verb are in past form. Will we use to infinitve or to have V3/ed form for the second verb? Kind regards!
Hi tunalee,
I would say --> The cover was thought to be made of iron.
After "was thought" it's also common to use an adjective (e.g. It was thought necessary / It was thought impossible ). However, it's not common to put an - ed verb form there (e.g. The cover was thought made of iron ), so I think the full form thought to be made ... is preferred.
I hope that helps.
Hello team Kindly help me change this sentence to passive. Experts say that the rains will be heavy this year .

Frequently Asked Questions
What is active and passive exercise.
Active and passive exercises are those exercises that either deal with the identification of the voices or changing active into passive voice or vice versa.
How do you change passive voice to active?
To change a sentence in the passive voice to active voice, one must know the tense of the verb. Once students understand the tense of the verb, it becomes easy for them to convert. First, we interchange the subject and object of the sentence and remove the ‘by’ from the sentence. The verb in the sentence is also changed accordingly.
