This is wonderfully organised! Great job!

The answer key for the reading comprehension worksheet named “A Respectable Woman” is wrong for Problem 1. I think the correct answer should be A instead of C.

An excellent job

This is the best educational website ever for all EFL students around the world.

Thank you so much!

Hello. Are all these stories Fair Use? Do we have to worry about Copyright?

You may use them in classrooms, homes, and other educational settings. If you are a publisher or other commercial entity: contact me .

I cant find the long reponse answer :()

Yeah, those vary and should be evaluated more openly.

We can talk about any of them though, if you have a question or want to bounce your ideas off someone.

Wow! I have been searching all over the internet for something like this. I am doing a jumpstart class for struggling students prior to the beginning of the school year and this is exactly what they need. Thank you.

Where can i get a solution to these worksheets

I think this site is fantastic and it’s easy to use 🙂 It’s nice that for the reading comprehension worksheets there are multiple choice and long response questions, as students need practice answering harder questions.

Hey +Georgia , did you get a solution to these?

Check the links that say “Answers”

These are AMAZING!!! Thank you so much!!! A long-term substitute who has been struggling.

Courtney Meger

Very helpful for me and my friends to learn more about language arts

Lori Reaves

I teach a nursing assistant course. I came across your very helpful site while looking for a way to determine incoming students’ reading comprehension level. What grade would they have to score to be considered competent at that grade level? Thanks!

These worksheets shouldn’t really be used to evaluate a student’s reading level. Rather, they should be used with students whose reading levels are known. If you know that a student is reading at a 6th-10th grade level, these 8th grade worksheets are probably appropriate for him or her. I’m sorry that I currently have no diagnostic test available. Perhaps I will devise one someday. Best wishes!

Thank you Made it very easy to find anwsers to my work

Yeah, this is an interesting situation.

I’ve thought about putting up a 99 cent annual paywall over the answer keys to prevent students from accessing them, but decided that it was a bad idea.

Mainly because motivated students use the site too, as well as cheaters, and shouldn’t motivated students be able to check their work?

Not to mention that a resourceful student can always use the Internet to find the answers to their homework and “workaround” the learning experience, so to speak.

I’m all for making it harder for cheaters, but not to the point where it cripples the learning experiences of those with sincere intentions.

Any one else have any thoughts on this?

I just have to echo all the comments here. This is THE most helpful site I have ever found for teaching reading comprehension at a variety of levels. These are not boring and are not so extensive as to intimidate reluctant readers. You are an absolute life saver!!! Thank you!

I appreciate your echoes. Thank you for visiting and I hope that I can continue to an asset to you in the coming years.

8th grade is traditionally the last year of middle school for students. Before these students set sail for high school there is one last push at the reading skills and teachers work to get them prepared for the next level. As with most curriculums, the 8th grade reading curriculum spirals around previous skills and builds new avenues in other directions. By this stage students should be able to determine the main idea of a work with relative ease, we do start to encourage students to compare and contrast between a series of works much more. Students begin to work more on citing evidence in a body of text to support their arguments and explore dialogue or the impact of events in a story. This is also the level where we expect students to begin to validate the sources that they are depending on. At this point we expect students to have a good handle on figurative language and expect them to read between the lines. This comes in handy when students move on to the traditional literature that is explored in high school.

If you scroll down the page, you will find reading passages and question sets that test you at an 8th grade reading level. Students at this point, should have very good reference and research skills. This is why you will find a number of nonfiction works in here. Students towards the end of their middle school careers are about to infer thoughts and work off of context clues. We highlight the use of those specific skills in this section. Towards the end of the middle school experience we include the introduction of novel based reading. This series of worksheets below has a few sheets that complement well known novels.

The Goals of an 8th Grade Reading Program

Like most reading programs, it starts off by building up what they have mastered in past years. Students are expected to improve their analytical reading skills. This would include using evidence and facts to assert a knowledgeable opinion. Determining the main idea and themes of a text is an essential skill at this level. Once again, we would expect them to be able to cite direct evidence within the text to support their position. Students are expected to break apart specific elements within a work to help them make solid and reasonable decisions. They should be able to compare the structure of full text, paragraphs, and sentence. From text they should be able to compile a list of positive and negative solutions that they then can put through the research process to access the accuracy and validity of each solution. Students also tend cover materials that is found across all genres of literature. The medium in which students access this material is vast and boundless. Students will be able to determine the value and limitations of each available medium.

The Most Common Grade 8 Literature

Eighth grade is the most crucial year of one's educational life. During this year, students are advised to read as much fiction as they can along with reading some nonfiction books and other literary works. Eighth graders must put in all their efforts in reading, as it will help them a lot in high school. There are many novels, poems, and short stories which every eighth-grader must read.

Given below are some of the most important literary pieces every eighth-grader must know about:

Novels, irrespective of their genre and form, are very essential for the eighth graders to improve their reading skills. Eighth-graders are always advised by their teachers to read as many novels as they can. This type of literary work not only improves reading skills, but it also introduces the reader to some new words, boosts the reader's imagination, and helps with their vocabulary and word choices. Some of the most important novels for eighth graders include To Kill a Mocking Bird, Wuthering Heights, Looking for Alaska, A Walk to remember, The Secret Life Of Bees, Hunger Games, Ginger Kid, Bringing Back Our Oceans, and many other such novels.

Poetry is an important part of our English literature and it also plays a vital role in polishing the reading skills of the eighth-graders. Some of the most important poetry works for eighth graders are Pass On, This Is Just to Say, Daddy, Nothing Gold Can Stay, Shakespearean Sonnets, We Real Cool, mother to son, and others such.

Short Stories

Because the short stories are usually read in one sitting, eighth-graders prefer and enjoy them more than any other piece of literature. There are a lot of short stories for eighth-graders that it is difficult to enlist them all. However, few of them include Everyday Use, Charles, Lamb to Be Slaughter, To Build a Fire, Seventh Grade, All Summer in A Day, Araby, etc.
