About the Playhouse Theatre
The Playhouse Theatre first opened in 1882 under the name of the Royal Avenue Theatre and is a Victorian-style building, designed by F. H. Fowler & Hill. The venue is Grade II listed and maintains its historic façade. Since renovation in the early 1900s, the theatre reduced its seating capacity to fewer than 800, making it an intimate yet accessible venue for medium-scale musicals and plays. The venue was taken over by the BBC in 1951 for use as a recording studio for live performances, including The Goon Show and the radio version of Steptoe and Son . Iconic bands such as The Beatles, KISS, Led Zeppelin and The Who have also played live performances at the venue. The Playhouse Theatre is renowned for its celebrity-filled productions. Legendary British actor and Star Wars star Alec Guinness made his stage debut at the Playhouse in 1934 in the Ward Dorane play Libel! . Recent stars to tread the boards include James McAvoy in Cyrano de Bergerac . Since November 2021, the Playhouse has operated under the Kit Kat Club moniker, with a refurbished and immersive front of house and auditorium experience for Cabaret .

Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre
The Kit Kat Club in London is a refurbished Playhouse Theatre. The Playhouse Theatre opened in 1882, and was originally called the Royal Avenue Theatre. After 23 years of production, the theatre was closed for refurbishment. Sadly, renovation works killed six people as the roof of Charing Cross railway station collapsed during the refurbishment.
The Playhouse Theatre then reopened in 1907. Early shows include plays by George Bernard Shaw, as well as performances from the Almeida Theatre . More recently, the Playhouse has been home to West End revivals including An Inspector Calls , 1984 and La Cage Aux Folles .
After a world premiere at the Young Vic , The Jungle transferred to the Playhouse Theatre in 2018. To stage the production, the auditorium was redesigned to allow for audiences to sit on multiple sides of the stage.

The Playhouse Theatre has a seating capacity of 786 seats - Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle. The Playhouse Theatre was renovated in order to house Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
