5th grade decision-making skills: Find out what you need to know

technology lessons 5th grade

Children are not born with the ability to make responsible decisions. It is a skill that is learned over time and involves making mistakes and learning from them. As your child becomes more independent, he’ll be faced with making more decisions on his own. Director of the Rutgers Social and Emotional Laboratory Maurice Elias says that it is important to build this skill before the teenage years when problems and decisions can have more serious consequences.

technology lessons 5th grade

The late elementary years are a time of great personal and social growth. As children grow older, they become better at making decisions, solving problems, and working in groups. Early adolescence begins around the age of 11, and this brings along its own challenges. As children’s bodies begin to change their emotions can seem to change at a moment’s notice. Developing your child’s social and emotional skills can help him manage his emotions and behavior and make responsible choices. The concepts highlighted in this section are based on the five sets of competencies developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning ( CASEL ).

group of kids

The ability to make responsible decisions combines your child’s ability to identify and manage his emotions with his social awareness and relationship skills. You can support your child’s growing ability to make responsible decisions so that he is better equipped to make decisions on his own. Decisions like whom your child sits with at lunch or which shirt he puts on each day may seem small to you, but in the later elementary years, decisions can become more serious. For example, in the late elementary years, some children get their first smartphones or unsupervised internet time. Choices your child makes about how to present himself online can have long-term consequences that he may not understand yet. With your guidance, he can be better prepared for the future.

family game

Your child should be able to understand and explain why it is important to obey rules and laws, whether it’s traffic laws, rules at home, or rules in the classroom.

boy reading

Your fifth-grader should be able to set some goals and priorities and create a plan related to them. These priorities can be related to schoolwork, like getting a good grade or completing a reading assignment, or relationships, like helping a friend or family member. Your child should also be able to think of different solutions for problems and think of the consequences of their choices.

technology lessons 5th grade

Keep in mind every child develops at his own pace, both physically and emotionally. If you have concerns about your adolescent’s development, please contact your health care provider or your child’s teacher or school counselor.

Learn more about how to support your child with our fifth-grade decision-making tips page .

By fifth grade, children are pros at navigating the routines and expectations of school. They have spent many years in a classroom, from kindergarten (and perhaps even preschool) on through the grade they're in now. They are on the cusp of adolescence and looking ahead to middle school.

Their maturity is showing in how they handle themselves emotionally and in terms of discipline and behavior, and they're handling increasingly challenging work at school as they tackle more difficult academic requirements in the classroom. Here's a general overview of what your child might learn in school this year.

What Do Kids Learn in 5th Grade?

Fifth grade is a year for putting all the academic pieces together. In 5th grade, your child is saying goodbye to elementary school and preparing for middle school. They may have different teachers for each subject for the first time this year and will be expected to take more responsibility for organization and long-term planning. Though curriculum varies from school to school, there are some common skills and concepts to learn in 5th grade.

As your 5th grader is merely a year away from the challenging curriculum of middle school , this is the year that math programs step it up a notch. This year your child will be asked to stretch their brain to come up with solutions to more complicated problems, ones that ask them to use multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition all within the same problem.

They'll likely to learn the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" as a way to remember the order in which to perform operations (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction).

Your 5th grader will begin learning some geometry, including the symmetry of shapes, the roles of perpendicular and parallel lines, as well as how to use the formulas to calculate the volume of geometric shapes. Other skills learned this year include: conversion of fractions, number plotting and the features of data sets.

By now, your 5th grader has grasped many of the mechanical skills of reading and should be reading chapter books with relative fluency . This year they will be challenged to read many different genres with a critical and interpretive eye.

Expect your child to be doing a lot of independent reading and writing book reports that analyze the characters, plot, and setting as they relate to the author's purpose in writing the book. They will also learn to back up their opinions using examples from the text.

Fifth grade writing instruction comes hand-in-hand with reading in a combined class known as Language Arts. This year students will be writing every day in a number of different ways. Many teachers will have time for journaling during which students are asked to write for personal expression, be it poetry, autobiography, or fiction.

A great deal of emphasis is given to the writing process, as students master the art of editing for punctuation, flow, and clarity of thought. This year your child will build a writing portfolio of their best work, a process that allows them to learn to evaluate their own work.

Fifth-grade students become hands-on scientists exploring the physical world this year. Areas of study include the solar system, photosynthesis, the digestive system, and the chemical properties of elements.

In this regard, your child will learn the Scientific Method, measuring the changes to the substances with which their experiments and presenting their findings in a factual manner.

Social Studies

The focus of social studies in fifth is citizenship. Students learn about our nation's history, are challenged to analyze what they have learned about the causes, implications, and different cultures of the colonies and people who founded them.

Your child will learn about the evolution of our government and its branches, as well as spending time learning geography and unique features of each of the states.

Question: How does student access work?

Answer: With your purchase you get one class account that all students use to access the lesson pages. Think of this website like a textbook but digital. The username and password’s purpose is to give students access to the textbook. Then from there you (the teacher) still facilitate student progress by letting them know which lesson page to go to and you’ll still collect their finished assignments for assessment.

Question: What platform will the students be using? Are they done in google drive? Like an interactive notebook?

Answer: All of the digital content is housed on my website. The lesson plans and rationale pages are for the teacher (and administrators, right?) as PowerPoint files, and the website is set up to just click and go for the students to complete the activities. Think of the PPT files like the teacher manual and the website like the student workbook (but digital). Visit it ahead of time at k5technologycurriculum.com to get an idea how it works. You can find several free pages on the Samples dropdown menu. If/when you purchase access, you will create a class username and password to access the grade level pages included for your purchase.

Question: Do these include Google Apps or MS Office?

Answer: Both! There are lessons to teach excel/sheets, word/docs, and PPT/slides.

You can pick and choose which lessons to do with your students. If you have access to Google Apps but not to MS Office, just skip the MS Office lessons and vice versa.

Question: Can I attach the lessons to Google Classroom?

Answer: Some teacher will choose to use Google Classroom as a way to collect student assignments in order to grade them, but students will still need to go to the website to complete the lesson.

Question: Do I need to buy anything additional software for my students to use this curriculum?

Answer: No! Everything you need is included. There are optional outside subscriptions for some activities. If you want to use the lessons for digital passport from common sense media (4th grade) then you will need to make a free teacher account. There are optional “early finisher” activities like Moby Max and discovery education that could be used if you have an account but there are tons of other options if you don’t.

Question: Do I have to buy all of the grade levels or can I just buy the one(s) I need?

Answer: Individual grade levels can be purchased and if you decide you need more, it is easy to add additional grade levels at any time. Scroll down to see the purchase options.

Check out these video clips below to see some of the activities included.
